Homemade Mason Jar Soup Gift
Okay, real talk, I used to overthink homemade gifts. Baked goods go stale. Candles feel impersonal. But a soup jar hits different.

It’s practical, it looks pretty on a shelf, and when someone finally cooks it on a cold night, they’ll think of you. That’s a win in my book.
What Goes Inside the Jar
You’ll need a 1-litre mason jar and these dry ingredients. Layer them in order, from smallest to largest, so they look beautiful through the glass.
- ½ cup red lentils
- ½ cup split peas
- ½ cup barley or rice (your choice)
- ¼ cup small pasta like macaroni
- 2 tbsp dried onion flakes
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
- 1 bouillon cube (veg or chicken), wrapped in cling film
- 1 bay leaf (optional)
👉 Always wrap the bouillon cube in cling film before adding. A loose cube can get damp and affect the shelf life.
How to Put It Together
This takes about 10 minutes, start to finish.
Add ingredients one by one, starting with lentils at the bottom.

Press each layer lightly before adding the next. This keeps everything neat and the lines clean.
Seal the lid tightly.

Tie a ribbon around the jar and attach a small gift tag with the cooking instructions below.

Use a wide-mouth funnel if you have one. It keeps the layers tidy and makes the jar look like it came from a fancy shop.
Gift Tag Instructions (Write This Out)
You have two options here. We made a free printable gift tag sheet with 6 ready-to-print tags.
It’s print-ready on a standard US Letter paper so you can print it straight away, cut the tags out, punch a hole, and tie them to the jar. No designing, no formatting, nothing extra to do.

Or if you prefer, just write the instructions on a small card yourself. Either way works perfectly.
Here’s what the tag says:
TO COOK:
Add jar contents to a pot
Add 5-6 cups water or broth
Add 1 cup chopped veggies
Simmer 25-35 minutes
Add salt & pepper to taste
My Easy Upgrades (Optional, But Worth It)
The base jar is already great. But if you want to take it up a notch, these add-ins make a big difference.
Stir in one small can of diced tomatoes while it simmers. It gives the broth a gorgeous, rich colour and a little extra depth.
A tablespoon of butter or olive oil stirred in at the end makes it taste like you slow-cooked it all day.
For protein, add shredded cooked chicken or cubed paneer in the last 5 minutes. Both work beautifully.
Why This Works for Beginners
No soaking needed. No fancy equipment. Everything comes from a regular grocery store.
It works for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Just swap the bouillon cube and add whatever protein you like. The whole soup is ready in about 30 minutes.
A Few Tips Before You Go
Make it in batches. Put together 3 or 4 jars at once. They make perfect teacher gifts, housewarming presents, or just a thoughtful surprise for a friend.
Store it right. Keep the finished jar in a cool, dry place and it stays good for 3 to 6 months easily.
Keep moisture out. Even a little humidity can affect the dry ingredients, so avoid storing near the stove or sink.
